The Screen

Feeds and Folders

  • Reader X presents to you a wallpaper of all your feeds and feed-items
  • Feeds are displayed as horizontal stripes
  • Newest articles are on the left
  • Swipe horizontally to browse through all headlines of articles
  • Swipe vertically to browse through your feeds

Colors and their meaning

  • Unread items … are blue
  • Starred items … are yellow
  • Read items … are grey

Time Shading

  • Newer items have a more saturated color
  • Older items are gradually faded
  • In Settings you can adjust the time frame from 1 hour to 48 hours

By tapping onto the clock icon in the toolbar you can adjust the time frame from 1 hour to 48 hours

Unread Count

  • Unread count per feed and folder are shown at the right of the screen
  • To mark all items read in a feed or folder, tap the unread count button

Zoom into one Feed

  • Instead of swiping horizontally to see all items of a feed, tap on the feed title on the left
  • You will then zoom into all items of that feed
  • Scroll vertically if more items are available than fit to the screen
  • To zoom out, tap the feed title again
  • On the top right corner the unread count of the feed is displayed
  • Tap on it to mark all items as read and automatically zoom out

Articles

Tap to preview

  • Tap an article box to get a popover showing the summary / content of the item
  • The exact date is shown here
  • The summary / content is scrollable

  • Tap the star to mark item starred
  • Tap the enlarge button to see the full original webpage of the item

Readability, Instapaper and ReadItLater View

  • Besides the standard preview you can choose to see an extract of the chosen article generated by Readability, Instapaper or ReadItLater services
  • For most feeds this will enable you to read the full content of an article in the preview popover already, without the need to open the full web page
  • Just tap on the book icon and select your preferred service
  • Your selection is being remembered for that feed, so the service will be used, whenever you preview an article of that feed

Sharing

  • For account based services you need to log in at first time use

Settings

  • Show badge
    Show unread count badge on the home screen
  • Reload automatically
    ON: Reader X automatically syncs with Google Reader when you start the app or bring it back from the background after 15 minutes
    OFF: Sync occurs only manually
  • Pre-fetch webpages in background
    ON: Webpages begin to load as soon as you open a preview popover. When you then decide to open the full page, the page is already partially / fully loaded
    OFF: Webpage begins to load, when you open the full page
  • Show preview
    ON: A preview popover is shown when you select an article. You can then decide to open the full web page
    OFF: By selecting an article the full web page is immediately shown
  • Optimize database
    • Usually there should be no need to optimize the database of the app
    • Though, if you experience any performance decline using Reader X after a while, optimize the database
    • Database optimization can take several seconds
  • Logout
    Logout from current account and re-login

  • Color fading: Time frame in which items get from saturated to fainted colors

  • Format of boxes: Decide whether you want to have more squared or wider boxes
  • Size of boxes: Increase or decrease size of boxes
  • Size of font: Increase or decrease font size
  • Select font used for the wallpaper: Choose your preferred font type
  • Select font used in preview popover: Choose preferred font type and size
